Step 1: Think about your Time and Talents
Everyone has something to offer when it comes to granting wishes! Before getting started, think about how much time you'd like to give, then evaluate and list your talents and strengths. Are you bi-lingual? Great at photography? Love to listen and relate to people?
Step 2: Volunteer Application
Email firstname.lastname@example.org to receive the volunteer application. Make-A-Wish Iowa staff will go over opportunities in your area, as well as volunteer job responsibilities and expectations, at this time. After completing the application, we ask that you mail or fax it to the address on the application.
Step 3: Background Check
For the protection of the wish families and the Foundation itself, we run an extensive background check on all staff and volunteers. Make-A-Wish volunteers are routinely trusted to work directly with our wish families, and may handle Make-A-Wish resources (including money or donated goods) as they arrange wishes or volunteer at events. Once your application has been received, we will e-mail you a link to complete your background check.
Step 4: Training Program
Pending the results of your background check, we will set you up with a Make-A-Wish University account. An e-mail including your username and password will be sent to you. You have two weeks to complete the Wish Granting Trainings.
Step 5: Approval
At this point, you will receive important information including the volunteer manual and wish packet for your review. Our wish coordinator will also provide the contact information for your area committee chair and wish chair. Most of our 11 area committees meet on a monthly-basis.
Step 6: Maintaining Active Status
All volunteers are expected to sign our Conflict of Interest form annually. They are also required to submit to a background check every three years. Volunteers will be contacted at the beginning of August to complete these requirements with a September 1 due date.
