#GivingTuesday Focuses on Philanthropy

November 30, 2015

Most people know Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, but this year, December 1st is #GivingTuesday and charities like Make-A-Wish® Iowa gear up for the day.

“Giving Tuesday is a great opportunity for people to get in touch with their philanthropic side,” said Jamie Rasko, Marketing & Communications Manager for Make-A-Wish Iowa. “It’s a great way to start the giving season as people think more about connecting with their communities and making year end contributions to their favorite charitable organizations.”

This global event is celebrated throughout the non-profit world as a day to educate people about their missions and the good work they do in the community. And, according to Rasko, it’s doesn’t have to be all about financial gifts.

“Certainly financial gifts make a huge impact, but I think it’s also a good time to consider choosing a charity to volunteer for in 2016 on GivingTuesday. Make-A-Wish Iowa is a state-wide organization and we use volunteers to plan fundraising events and meet with our wish families,” said Rasko. “Gifts in-kind are another fantastic way to support your favorite charity. Our organization is always looking for airline miles and hotel points, for instance, which greatly offset our costs to grant wishes.”

According to, #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Observed on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. Since its inaugural year in 2012, #GivingTuesday has become a movement that celebrates and supports giving and philanthropy with events throughout the year and a growing catalog of resources.
