At the age of 10 most girls start thinking about how great it would be to have a horse of their own. The read about Flicka instead of seeing the movie and they start to dream about what it would be like to ride whenever they want to. Most 10 year-old girls don’t lose their hair because of chemo, or spend days in the hospital.
Elinor is not like most girls. She has Leukemia. Elinor dreamed about having a horse of her own and Theo was the one she fell in love with! I was lucky enough to get to see Elinor’s wish come true. I got to be there when she first started bonding with Theo at the wish presentation; I got to see her ride him and also see him get used to his new home.
Having grown up around horses and competing in horse shows myself when I was younger, I remember thinking what a great way this would be for Elinor to get away from all the negatives that go along with her illness. Theo can be Elinor’s world when she is with him. A horse can truly be your best friend. They listen to you, and those big eyes show they understand just how you feel!

An update from Elinor’s Dad really says it all:
We just wanted you to know that Elinor and Theo are going strong these days!! Elinor is a sophomore, and she and Theo are happily preparing for another horse show coming up in November. We cannot thank you enough for bringing such joy to Elinor’s life. Theo has truly been a best friend throughout Elinor’s treatment and after care! No words can truly describe what she felt on that day when she received Theo through your generosity. Much thanks and prayers go out to all of you!
