DES MOINES, IA – The lights are out on Make-A-Wish® Iowa’s largest fundraising event, but the need for volunteers at Jolly Holiday Lights remains strong. After being open for 37 nights and hosting more than 25,000 vehicles, volunteer will spend the next four days removing sponsor banners and electrical cords, deconstructing light displays and loading them on a truck until the 2014 season begins in November.
This year’s tear down volunteers are committed to getting the work done, despite the arctic conditions they are dealing with. “Our core volunteer group has been setting up and tearing down this event since it began 18 years ago. This year, though, we really need extra people to help because of the difficult working conditions and need to get things done more quickly than in the past,” said Ashley Dockendorf, Director of Community Alliance for Make-A-Wish. “We’re grateful for the volunteers who are committed to being here and doing their part to help wishes come true in Iowa and hope others in the area will come help, especially on Saturday and Sunday.”
Dockendorf suggests that anyone who has made a New Year’s Resolution to volunteer or do more for their community could start as early as today. “We will be here from 8:30 to 4:30 every day through Sunday to tear down Jolly Holiday Lights. We will provide lunch and everyone is welcome to come out, regardless of your skill level. Just be sure to dress warm!”
Jolly Holiday Lights is the largest fundraising event that Make-A-Wish Iowa hosts each year. In 2012, the event raised enough money to grant about 34 wishes. The organization is granting a wish to a child with a life-threatening medical condition every other day in Iowa.
